The VNPA Planning Committee is pleased to announce social entrepreneur, Hal Colston as the 2018 Annual Conference keynote speaker!
Hal spent 17 years in the culinary field as a chef culminating in a teaching position at New England Culinary Institute (1989) after attending the University of Pennsylvania (1975). Transitioning to social services in 1993, Hal created the Good News Garage (1996) and NeighborKeepers (2006) as a social entrepreneur. He received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Saint Michael’s College (2000) for creating Good News Garage. Appointed by Governor Peter Shumlin in 2011 as Executive Director of SerVermont, Hal now serves as Partnership for Change Director since 2013. Hal was named the 2014 “Vermonter of the Year” by the Burlington Free Press.
Hal has served on many non-profit boards such as the Howard Center, United Way of Chittenden County, VNA of Chittenden and Grand Isle Counties as chair, and Vermont Health Foundation as chair. He is board chair for the Center for Whole Communities and serves on the board of the Richard and Barbara Snelling Center for Government, Vermont PBS, Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, Vermont College of Fine Arts, as well as the United Way of Northwest Vermont Community Investment Committee.
Hal is committed to social justice and has engaged our community in many different ways over the years to help it become what it ought to become, a beloved community for all.
