VNPA 2022 Conference: Session Spot Light: Are We Addressing Healthcare Disparities or Checking A Box?

Are We Addressing Healthcare Disparities or Checking A Box?

Racial disparities in medical care receive lower quality and intensity of healthcare than whites across a wide range of preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic services, and disease entities. These healthcare disparities contribute to systematic discrimination and are often supported by institutional policies and unconscious bias based on negative stereotypes. Effectively addressing disparities will require a systematic overhaul, beginning with appropriately training personnel, recruiting minorities, and effectively identifying and eliminating inequities in healthcare. Healthcare organizations and providers can no longer write a policy to “check a box” supporting diversity, equity, and inclusivity without implementing effective strategies to eliminate healthcare disparities. Come hear Dr. Irene Bean discuss this with us.
