Piecing the Puzzle: Diabetes Mellitus in Pediatrics: Which Type is It? - Amy Dowd, CPNP-PC, CDCES , RD
In the past, a child or adolescent who was newly diagnosed with diabetes mellitus was presumed to have Type 1 diabetes. With the increasing prevalence of obesity, pediatric patients who are diagnosed with diabetes mellitus can no longer be categorized as having Type 1 diabetes by default. The incidence of Type 2 diabetes has been increasing in the pediatric population. Pediatric patients with Type 2 diabetes often present differently than adults and the specific type of diabetes mellitus that the patient has at diagnosis is not always clear. While not as common, there are also monogenic forms of diabetes mellitus that first present earlier in life and may also be in the differential for a pediatric patient. It is important to determine the type of diabetes the patient has as the treatment options will differ.
Amy Dowd started her career in healthcare as a Registered Dietitian where she worked as a clinical dietitian at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford Medical Center in California. She has worked as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in pediatric endocrinology since 2012. She cares for patients with a variety of endocrine disorders and recently coauthored a textbook chapter for lab diagnosis in pediatric endocrinology. She specializes in the management of children with diabetes mellitus and has been working at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx for the past 8 years. She is also a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist and has been a speaker for school nurses in New York City and Westchester County and for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
