Change Your Lenses: Weight Bias and Obesity Stigma  -  Kimberley Sampson MD, FACOG, DABOM

Weight stigma is a key aspect of the lived experience of individuals with obesity, and adversely affects health.

Despite the increased attention on the obesity epidemic and its association with severe health risks, obesity remains a significant driver of preventable chronic disease and healthcare cost, weight discrimination continues to increase and is commonly encountered across health care systems, from ancillary staff through to providers.

Healthcare professionals have a clear role in identification assessment and management of those at risk from obesity and in providing effective prevention and treatment interventions. This includes implementing strategies that motivate all patients to participate in health care. One technique is being conscious of the existence of obesity biases and its impact on patients with obesity. Learn to identify your bias, apply concepts to practice and discuss and implement strategies for change.

Kimberley Sampson, MD, FACOG, DABOM is a Board-certified OB/GYN and Obesity Medicine Physician at Dartmouth Health.
