AHRQ Safety Program for Telemedicine: Improving Antibiotic Use

Posted over 1 year ago by Eileen Murphy

We are reaching out about a new Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)-funded project, the AHRQ Safety Program for Telemedicine: Improving Antibiotic Use, led by NORC at the University of Chicago and Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Program Background: Infection related concerns are the second most common reason for telemedicine visits (after mental health evaluations). Many of these visits result in the unnecessary prescription of antibiotics. This program adapts antibiotic stewardship efforts for the telemedicine environment.

Program Goal: The program will work with healthcare practices across the country to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use and promote appropriate antibiotic prescribing for patients who receive care over telemedicine.

Program Details: The program is recruiting primary care practices, community-based health centers, specialty practices that provide primary care, and urgent care clinics. Practices may provide care exclusively via telemedicine or in addition to in-person visits.

  • Practices will learn about and implement best practices in antibiotic use in the telemedicine environment through short educational presentations and support from experts.
  • There is no cost to participate.
  • Participating staff can earn CEUs, CMEs, and ABIM MOC points.

The deadline to enroll is May 23, 2024. Thank you for your consideration!

Sincerely,
The AHRQ Safety Program for Telemedicine team
