AANP 2014 National Conference Awards for Excellence

Posted almost 10 years ago by Deborah Wachtel

To My Vermont Colleagues,

American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) recently held a very inspirational national conference at the Opryland Resort in Nashville, Tennessee.  There were close to 6,000 NP attendees!  I would like to thank the Vermont members who were able to attend and to be part of a wonderful conference experience.  It was a tremendous opportunity to network with an incredible group of nurse practitioners.

Every year at the National Conference, AANP recognizes outstanding achievements by NPs and NP advocates by presenting the annual AANP State Award for Excellence and recognizing these individuals at the AANP National Conference. The State Award for Excellence recognizes an NP in each state who demonstrates excellence in clinical practice and recognizes the efforts of an individual who had made a significant contribution toward increasing the awareness and acceptance of NPs.

This year, the Vermont AANP State Award for Excellence was awarded to Alma Mueller, FNP, MS.

In 2002 Alma received her MS from the University of Vermont nurse practitioner program and practiced in primary care, addiction medicine, and psychiatric/mental health.  In each area she was an inspiring source of healing for her patients.  More recently at Central Vermont Medical Center she was the inspiration behind the creation of the NP/PA Provider Group, being the driving force that has brought this group into the forefront of the issues being grappled with as health care reform moves forward.  In that role she championed the cause of removing barriers to practice at CVMC and creating the recognition that the position of NP and PA is already the front line of health care delivery.  Her tireless dedication to this cause spurred the ongoing work that continues in her premature absence.  We thank her for her dedication and passion and sorely miss her presence.

Thank you one and all for your dedication, passion, and commitment. I am honored and privileged to serve as your Vermont State Representative.  I hope to see many more of you at the national conference in 2015 in The Big Easy!  I already know the people I am nominating for Vermont State NP of Excellence and NP Advocate, it is not too late to start thinking about who you think deserves this prestigious honor. Nominations are open in September and I will send the nomination information out to one and all at that time.

Deborah Wachtel, NP, MPH, MS

Vermont State Representative of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners

Past President, VNPA
